What is a status of residence? / 在留資格とは何か
To stay in Japan and to work, study, or live with family, you need a status of residence assigned by the government. Each status defines what activities you are allowed to do in Japan. The official status list explains the activities, examples, and length of stay for every status.
日本に滞在して働いたり、勉強したり、家族と暮らしたりするには、国が定める「在留資格」が必要です。在留資格ごとに、日本でできる活動が決まっています。公式の一覧表には、活動内容や該当例、在留期間が示されています。

Statuses based on activity / 活動の内容で決まる在留資格
The law divides statuses of residence into two large groups. One group is called activity-based statuses, and it covers things such as work, study, and family stay depending on what you actually do in Japan.
在留資格は、法律上大きく二つのグループに分かれています。一つは「活動資格」と呼ばれ、就労や留学、家族滞在など、日本で何をするかによって決まります。

Statuses based on status or position / 身分や地位で決まる在留資格
The other group is called status-based residence categories. This group includes permanent residents and the spouses or children of Japanese nationals, and it is defined by who you are rather than by what activity you carry out.
もう一つは「居住資格」と呼ばれ、永住者や日本人の配偶者・子など、活動の内容ではなく身分や地位によって決まります。

Each status defines a specific allowed activity / 在留資格ごとに認められる活動が決まっている
Every status of residence in the official list comes with a description of the exact activity that is allowed. For example, the status called Professor is defined as engaging in research, guidance of research, or education at a university or an equivalent institution, or at a college of technology, in Japan.
一覧表のそれぞれの在留資格には、認められる活動の内容が具体的に書かれています。例えば「教授」という在留資格は、日本の大学やこれに準ずる機関、高等専門学校で研究や研究の指導、教育を行う活動と定められています。

The official list also shows the length of stay allowed for each status. For the Professor status, for instance, the possible periods of stay are 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, or 3 months, and the actual period given is decided individually.
一覧表には、在留資格ごとの在留期間も示されています。例えば「教授」の場合、在留期間は５年，３年，１年又は３月のいずれかとされています。
